How Magnetite Reduces Noise Transmission

Windows are typically the greatest source of noise penetration in a building. Soundproofing windows or doors is a great way to reduce noise and improve comfort. With Magnetite we upgrade your existing standard window to perform like a high-end soundproof window without the need for hacking. Our Magnetite Noise Shield can be installed in situations where a window change is either not wanted or not permitted, like in many condos, BTOs and commercial units.

To soundproof a window 3 main areas have to be addressed:

1. All material used has to be suitable for soundproofing

2. The window has to be tightly sealed on all 4 sides

3. A substantial airgap between the sheets of glazing

Soundproof Material

The soundproofing properties of all system materials, not just the glazing, play an important role in effective sound reduction. The composition of the frame is critical to the overall noise-blocking properties of a windows, as hollow frames can let the sound travel straight through, as is the case with most aluminium frames. For our add-on soundproofing in the Magnetite system, the frames are made from foam uPVC. This means that the whole frame consists of sound dampening foam to increase the ability to absorb noise more effectively. The glazing material for our Noise Shield is a clear 10mm acrylic. Acrylic is 18x as strong as glass with  only half the weight, making it the perfect choice for our detachable panels.

Tight Seal on all 4 sides

If air can come through your window into your space, so can noise. Our continuous magnetic seal ensures that when the Magnetite panels are in place, the double glazed window insulation system has the lowest air infiltration rate of any operational window. This seal creates an air cavity between the existing window and your Magnetite panels. As with traditional double glazing the air cavity acts as an insulation barrier against noise and temperature. Depending on the configuration of the existing window, we can adjust the size of the air cavity to maximize thermal insulation, acoustic insulation or both.

 Airgap

The distance between two sheets of glazing for soundproofing is important as it greatly influences the soundproofing result. The still air in the gap makes it difficult for soundwaves to move, therefore the bigger the gap, the better for soundproofing. Every 25mm increase of the airgap makes an audible difference. With the Magnetite Noise Shield we always achieve a minimum of 25mm and can often install with an airgap of 80-100mm which is ideal. We will discuss with you on site your requirements and what airgap can be achieved for your window.

With the use of soundproof PVC material, the airtight magnetic seal and a substantial airgap, Magnetite is the best add-on window noise solution available.
